The Guanyin Pavilion was built to last. And last. And last. This temple has sat atop a large reef rock in the middle of China’s Yangtze River in Ezhou for 700 years. When the water rises and covers the foundation, it looks like the structure is floating. Also known as the Goddess of Mercy Pavilion, the temple isn’t open to the public nowadays. But we’ve captured a glorious bird’s eye view of this historical treasure, holding its own against the swirling current. In 2012, a secretive group calling itself 3301 began recruiting for “highly intelligent individuals” online. Candidates had to prove their skills in codebreaking, cryptography and computer programming by solving a complex puzzle dubbed Cicada. It required knowledge of steganography, contacts on the ground everywhere from Seoul to Sydney, and the ability to obtain a copy of William Gibson’s famous disappearing poem “Agrippa.” What was the purpose of the puzzle? No one knows, but many set out to solve one of the internet’s greatest mysteries. At the age of 15, Marcus Wanner became one of the few to crack the code. But the Cicada challenge didn’t end there. Suddenly, more mysterious codes appeared—including a 58-page book of runes known as the “Liber Primus.” What was encrypted within the runes? This nunnery has an empowering claim to fame—it’s the only one in Nepal where the nuns practice martial arts. The community organization teaches young people who live on the South Side of Chicago everything they need to know to be first responders. Hurling is the national sport of Ireland. It’s the fastest game on grass. An ancient sport, it’s kind of like lacrosse, and it’s kind of like American football. But, really, it’s unlike any other sport. Hurling is uniquely Irish, and it takes strength, speed and stamina to play well. Danny Cullen is captain of his county’s team in northwest Ireland. Kappeler Milchsuppe is a Swiss milk soup with quite a history. Its origin goes all the way back to 1529. Legend has it that this soup was created by hungry infantrymen. They were on opposite sides of a conflict between Catholics and Protestants, but they put down their weapons and pooled their milk and bread to make and share soup. That soup is now credited with bringing peace to the region and honored with a memorial on a battlefield. Now, that’s an impressive soup. It’s still served in Switzerland to this day. Lise Abazs and her husband David Abazs are organic farmers in Finland. Not Finland, the country. Finland, Minnesota, where their land sits along the north shore of Lake Superior. There aren’t a lot of organic farms in northern Minnesota. The climate is harsh, and the soil is infertile and full of rocks. But the Abazs’s Round River Farm is flourishing. They can grow lettuce, spinach, kale and other vegetables, and that’s because they have nurtured their soil with compost and cover crops. “You have healthy soil, you end up with healthy plants,” Lise says. There is a lot to be learned from the way this duo farms and lives. They get all their energy from wind and power, pump their water from the earth and use a compost toilet. Beef noodle soup is a staple throughout Taiwan. You’ll pay around $6 for a bowl at most restaurants in Taipei. But you’ll fork over $321 for the elite beef noodle soup at Niu Ba Ba. Yes, $321. For. One. Bowl. Why so expensive? Well, for starters, it is made with high-quality wagyu beef. If it’s too pricey for you, there are options—a premium beef noodle soup that costs $160 a bowl and a classic version that goes for under $20. While the restaurant has fixed prices now, there was a time when customers could pay whatever they wanted for the soup. One diner chose to pay close to $1,000, which makes $321 sound like a bargain. Customers pay more than $60,000 for roughly a pound of quality agarwood, according to Wah Yuen. He has been selling incense for 70 years and hand rolls each stick in his shop. He is the executive director of the nonprofit Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Kathmandu, Nepal, and has operated on more than 130,000 patients. Sometimes art emerges from the most unexpected pairings. Lyle Small—a chemist and a self-described nerd— is president of Chromatic Technologies, a company that makes temperature-sensitive, color-changing inks (such as the one found on the Coors Light can). Kirileigh Jones is an artist who paints murals and loves to experiment, using any surface as her canvas. Watch as Small’s technological know-how combines with Jones’ artistic vision to create a piece of invisible art that comes to life as it gets cold. No lie. It’s the truth. And what about curry, kebab and shrimp on pizza? That’s happening, too. No matter which way you slice it, pizza is being reinvented. And everybody has an opinion about it. We’re dishing up more weird and wonderful foods in our latest season of Try It You’ll Like It.
