Patrick Davison is striking out stereotypes about old age in “Balloon Elderly,” a documentary about a slow-pitch softball team in Hongodai, Japan, made up mostly of men over 70. In Davison’s mind, these men embody the definition of the Japanese word ikigai, which roughly translates to “reason for being.” “I was inspired by this idea and how the Balloon Elderly found some of their ikigai in the friendship and camaraderie of the team and in the game of softball,” he says. “They liked winning as much as anyone, but it didn’t seem to be their main motivation. They truly cared about each other, and they tried to make the team a place where everyone was supported through the struggles of aging.” Davison, director of documentary projects and professor of visual communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, shot “Balloon Elderly” while he was in Japan as a Fulbright Scholar. He chronicles a season on the field with the Balloon Elderly, following the team through the final round of the Hinohara Tournament. He spends time with the players off the field, too, delving into their personal lives. “That was probably the biggest challenge—getting beyond societal barriers to reveal deeper stories,” Davison says. “In Japan, the society is very, very close-knit and getting access beyond the surface level is really, really difficult. It’s not that they distrust or dislike you. It’s just not something that’s done. It’s not societally accepted to ask to spend time with someone who is caring for their wife who has Alzheimer’s.” Still, the filmmaker gets his subjects to open up, adding a layer of poignancy to “Balloon Elderly.” One of the players, 79-year-old Yoshio Wada, talks about the death of his wife and his desire to live to 100. Another member of the team, Kinsaku Okabe, 83, reveals health issues and wishes he could quit working to focus on softball. Davison’s wife, Emiko, was instrumental in helping him develop a trusting relationship with these men so they felt comfortable talking. A native of Japan, she was the film’s translator and fixer. “We got married there in ’88, and we’ve traveled to Japan a number of times. Our kids are half Japanese, and her parents would come to visit. So I’ve been exposed to the culture, but I don’t know the culture really deeply like she does. Even in interviews, I would come at it from an American perspective, and she would help me understand the nuances of the answers,” says Davison, adding, “It’s not really my film. I’d say it’s our film because we did it together. It was a team effort.” — When we’re not making films, we’re watching them. Allan Brauner is a Holocaust researcher. His late mother Margaret Brauner, who lived from 1924 to 2017, was a Holocaust survivor. He discovered her name, the number tattooed on her arm and her signature on a list of female prisoners held at Auschwitz by the Nazis. There are 227 names on the list, and Brauner has made it his personal journey to uncover the stories of all those who experienced the Holocaust alongside his mother. We accompany Brauner as he travels to the Arolsen Archives in Bad Arolsen, Germany in search of information. The largest archives in the world on the victims of Nazi persecution, the institution houses 30 million documents. Ancestry formed a partnership with the Arolsen Archives to make these records widely available and searchable online, for free. “It is more important than ever to show what can happen if these values about solidarity, about equality, about respect are not upheld,” says Floriane Azoulay, the director of the Arolsen Archives. Alexandre Murith’s family has been making gruyère d’alpage in Switzerland for five generations, and there is an art to producing this cheese with a hard texture and no holes. While regular gruyère is made year-round, gruyère d’alpage is only made from May through October. That’s when the cows are allowed to graze freely in the mountains, nibbling on wildflowers. Once the cows are milked, the Murith family’s gruyère d’alpage is made in a traditional manner with no processing, and each wheel is aged for several months. His parents brought him and his eight siblings to the U.S. because they wanted their children to get an education. And Ta’u didn’t let them down. He went to college on a full scholarship and played pro football for the Cleveland Browns. After an injury sidelined his career, he didn’t give up—he reinvented himself. Crafting India’s 120-Foot-Long Snake Boats Crafting India’s 120-Foot-Long Snake Boats

Four hundred years ago, the snake boats of India were warships, used by battling kings along the backwaters of Kerala. Today, the long, canoe-like boats are used exclusively for racing. Reaching up to 120 feet in length, each snake boat can accommodate 100 rowers. In the town of Aranmula, snake boat racing takes on a special significance. The boats are known as Palliyodam and represent the snake upon which Lord Vishnu—the god of protection and preservation—rests. Creating these ornate works involves an intricate process. Wasim Razzouk is a tattoo artist in Jerusalem’s Old City. Ink runs deep in his family. The Razzouks have been tattooing visitors to the Holy Land for 500 years (and in Egypt for 200 years before that). Christian pilgrims flock to Razzouk Tattoo to get a cross tattoo based on one of the designs on wooden stamps that have been in the Razzouk family for generations. Razzouk is honored to be entrusted to leave such a special mark on someone’s skin. “It’s almost like baptizing somebody, and that’s a big responsibility,” Razzouk says. How Barbers Are Encouraging Men to Open Up About Mental Health Issues How Barbers Are Encouraging Men to Open Up About Mental Health Issues
2 months ago En
For many people, there’s a stigma surrounding mental health issues. They don’t feel comfortable, or like it’s even okay to discuss their feelings. Which is why Lorenzo Lewis founded The Confess Project, to take the shame out of talking about mental health. The national movement targets young men of color, and it’s picking up steam at barbershops across the South and Midwest. If there’s one place where men do open up, it’s the barbershop, Lewis says. So he is giving barbers the tools they need to facilitate honest, non-judgmental conversations with the guys in their chairs and, ultimately, access to professional help. Shelia Hill grew up in San Francisco’s Sunnydale Projects. It was a rough neighborhood. She got into trouble when she was young and dropped out of school. She thought it wasn’t for her. Hill’s attitude changed after she had her own children. One day, her son asked why he should bother going to school since she didn’t. It was a lightbulb moment. Hill realized that she had to do better for herself and her family. She learned how to read and got her high school diploma through Five Keys, an organization that gives members of underserved communities a chance to restart their education. Today, Hill works for Five Keys as community ambassador. She goes out into neighborhoods considered education deserts on the Five Keys bus and encourages residents to board the mobile classroom where they can study with a teacher and earn their GEDs. Hill doesn’t want anyone to feel ashamed for not finishing school. So she always makes sure to share her own story, letting people know there was a time when she couldn’t read. And she’s big on follow-up with potential students. “I’ll call them. I’ll bug them. I’ll text them. I’ll email ’em. Whatever it takes,” she says. “I just want you to get your education. That’s it.” SUBSCRIBE: https://goo.gl/vR6Acb #School #Education #Community This story is a part of our Human Condition series. In China, there is a belief that people who have passed on to the afterlife still need the same money and material goods they used here on Earth. In order to deliver these items to the spirit world, many will burn paper reproductions of these items as offerings. Known as zhizha, these paper goods have become wildly popular, and include everything from food and clothes, to luxury items like iPhones, Gucci bags, jewelry and cameras. Burning zhizha is a long, storied, part of Chinese history and tradition, dating back nearly 2,500 years. This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis. Wat Pha Sorn Kaew offers a modern take on the Buddhist temple. Built in the early aughts, this peaceful place of worship—known as the Temple on the Glass Cliff in English—is most notable for its five white Buddhas. You can see them for miles around. They are nestled together in meditation poses, arranged in descending order from tallest to smallest. The striking figures sit atop a five-level pagoda shaped like a lotus flower and covered in colorful mosaic tiles, stones and pottery. See why this temple is worth the five-hour drive from Bangkok. On September 20, 2019, millions of young people around the world skipped school to take part in the Global Climate Strike, organized by teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg. They sent a powerful message to world leaders attending the United Nations Climate Action Summit—we need to take action to combat climate change, and we need to do it now. We followed three teenagers as they prepped to join the march for climate justice in New York City—16-year-old Sophie Anderson, 17-year-old Kiana Low and 15-year-old Alessandro Dal Bon. Color Under the Lights: Representation in Film Color Under the Lights: Representation in Film

People of color have faced limited representation on screen. And it’s not just a lack of roles. Characters that play into stereotypes, actors with limited makeup options, and a lack of diversity behind the scenes all play into a larger, industry-wide problem. These factors have prevented people of color working in film from presenting their best face to the world, and have limited how authentic their characters look on screen. Actress, writer and director Gabourey Sidibe, showrunner Tanya Saracho and celebrity makeup artist Lola Okanlawon dig into the limitations on color under the lights—and how to create change moving forward. In Japan, This Black Vinegar Is Aged Like Wine In Japan, This Black Vinegar Is Aged Like Wine

Tadaaki Kuramato is a brewmaster. But he doesn’t brew beer—Kuramato cultivates a special black vinegar called kurozu at the Sakamoto Kurozu brewery in Japan. It’s made with rice malt, steamed rice and groundwater. And like a fine wine, this fine vinegar is aged. It’s Kuramato’s job to carefully look after 52,000 clay vases full of fermenting kurozu, all aspiring to perfection. The longer the vinegar ferments, the darker it becomes, and the smoother it tastes. It’s also known to have health benefits.
