Should you ignore “basic” English as too easy? Should you ignore “basic” English as too easy?

If you are a deep thinker and want to build true competence in English, sign up for my free daily emails: https://doingenglish.com/emails Transcript: Hello, I'm Julian Northbrook from https://doingenglish.com, enjoying some oh, so rare Irish sun. People learning English, especially at the higher levels, tend to shun the basics mistakenly thinking that it's easy, that they get that, they know that and that they need something more advanced. But true competence in English conversation is less to do with learning more difficult stuff, but to do with understanding the deeper underlying subtleties or to put it another way, how difficult sometimes the very basics of a language can be. Good example of this. I've just filmed one of the next extraordinary English speakers lessons. The lessons that my guys in extraordinary new speakers get from me every week to study. And it's based on a real conversation that I had about going to the tailors to get some trousers altered. I'm not super, super short, but I'm definitely

English exhaustion is a very real problem. And if left unchecked, it will cause you immense amounts of pain and frustration in the longterm in all areas of your life. Back in the day when I was working in a school in Japan, all in Japanese, largely because of some kind of administrative screw up, which had landed me a non-Japanese speaker in a school where they'd requested specifically a Japanese speaker, I was absolutely exhausted all the time, shattered from the second I woke up in the morning to the time I went to bed at night, because every ounce of my energy was constantly being drained by the grueling process of trying to comprehend and be comprehended in my second language, of just desperately trying to get my job done properly in a second language, not to mention the constant thoughts that would come to my mind, remembering the

And importantly, what is it not all about? Hello, I'm Dr. Julian Northbrook from https://doingenglish.com. By combining insights from decades of research in the fields of applied linguistics and applied psychology, I've developed an approach for helping speakers of English as a second language at the higher levels, people just like you, to go from sounding okay in English, but slow an awkward lacking in confidence, to speaking at incredible levels of fluency, naturalness, and confidence. And honestly, I do not believe the effective way to do that is by studying yet more of the same tired old English lessons that you can find on almost any

I'm Julian Northbrook from https://doingenglish.com. And this is a question that I've been thinking about a fair bit recently, how can we prove that everything is not an illusion? And, we can't. It's as simple as that. This is related to something that philosophers called the problem of other minds, or what is also often called the solipsism problem. We believe ourselves to be conscious, but how can we know that everything, including material things, or even a single proton isn't also conscious, or conversely, that we're not actually the only cons

Go here to learn the fluency part: https://doingenglish.com/freetraining Transcript: Hello. I'm Dr. Julian Northbrook from https://doingenglish.com and let's hit it with today's question. It's one which came up on Quora. How can I speak to strangers fluently in English? I'm going to give a pretty blunt, pretty brutally honest answer to this. There were a lot of answers on Quora to this question. And 99% of them totally missed the point. There were answers saying you can't ever get good at doing that because you'll never understand the colloquialisms of English speakers on the street, which is total bullshit. And it's obviously from somebody who has absolutely no idea what they're talking about. Others have talked about enrolling in a free ESL school and they were all just missing the point, because the answer to this question is simple and you already know what the answer is. If you want to talk to strangers in fluent English, what you've got to do is work on your English so you can speak fluent English, th

I send free daily emails to speak better English: https://doingenglish.com/emails Transcript: Hello, I'm Dr. Julian Northbrook from https://doingenglish.com. Is it possible to improve in English without grammar? Yes. And in fact, in most circumstances, not all, there are always exceptions, but in most circumstances, it is preferable. Most of the problems that people have trying to improve and speak well in English as a higher level learner is because of over reliance on grammar rules and studying them and trying to use them when actually, what they should be doing is changing the way that they learn and the way that they approach the speaking of English. Almost everybody learning and then trying to improve in English as a second language were taught English at school. And in school, they were almost definitely taught English as, first and foremost, a system of grammar rules and then some vocabulary to plug into those rules. And they would have been expected to somehow take these very, very abstract rules,

Learn how to chunk your English here: https://doingenglish.com/freetraining Also see here for more examples of how to speak English like a native speaker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukOoT9DptwM Transcript: Hello, I'm Julian Northbrook from doingenglish.com. Interesting question, why do I struggle to speak English even though I am quite good at grammar? The honest answer to that question is likely because you are quite good at grammar. You've probably focused on it too much. Spent too much time studying it. And therefore, are overly reliant on it, and you have been trying to train yourself to speak English by using those grammar rules, but the problem is that does not play nicely with what's supposed to happen in here to make this happen smoothly. There was a time when we thought native speakers of any language, not just English, were processing that language using grammar rules and individual words, computing them in the mind to create sentences step-by-step as they went. But that never really made th

This is an awesome line from Richard K. Morgan's excellent Broken Angels. It's not about English or language learning per se, but pay close attention to it, and you'll see why I am reading this and making a video about this. "Face the facts then act on them. It's the only mantra I know. The only doctrine I have to offer you, and it's harder than you'd think because I swear human seem hardwired to do anything but face the facts. Don't pray. Don't wish. Don't buy into centuries old dogma and dead rhetoric. Don't give in to your conditioning or your visions or your fucked up sense of whatever. Face facts then act." Now, Richard K. Morgan is the guy behind the excellent Altered Carbon series of books which got turned into a Netflix series a couple of years ago, but there's real wisdom in this extract. I send free daily emails for speaking better English: https://doingenglish.com/emails Transcript: Hello, I'm Doctor Julian Northbrook from doingenglish.com. Will I become less attractive if I can't speak English fluently? Yes. Realize it's quite a blunt answer and I'm sure it's one that a lot of people are not going to like but I think it would be naive in the extreme to think that it could be any other way. This is not necessarily to say that you have to be perfect in English and it's not really even to do with fluency per se. Rather, it's more to do with your ability to communicate well in English, to understand what people are saying, to follow the conversation, to get the subtleties in the social dynamics that are happening in a conversation and as well as being able to speak while yourself, to being able to have fun with the conversation, engage people, be interesting. And of course, in the workplace as well, being able to understand what people are doing, what their needs are and being able to get

A bit of an English teaching question today came up, "How should I feel about myself as an English teacher whose first language is not English?" The question was asked, and then the person went on to say that they feel very insecure, especially when confronted with other people who are not English teachers who are better at English than them. This is a good question. And it raises some important topics. And I think the main point here is that if you are a teacher of English as a second language and English is your second language, then it's imperative that you learn to be secure, learn to be confident with your abilities because if you don't do that, that is going to rub off onto your students. They are going t
