English is a spoken language and if you’re an English student it’s important that you move beyond basic written fluency to English speaking fluency. When you’re speaking English an important part of sounding like a native American English speaker is understanding—and not pronouncing!—silent letters. In this video I’ll help you get tons of speaking practice with English words that have silent letters. American English gets its unique sound, in part, from these non-sounds! If you’re trying to learn how to speak English like a native speaker it’s these kinds of pronunciation lessons that make a big difference. As you’re learning English speaking I can help you with all the sounds in American English, including these omitted sounds. English speaking presents you with quite a challenge: you need to learn English sounds AND non-sounds! My students often make speaking mistakes because they assume that every letter is voiced in English. But that’s not the case. English speaking fluency, in fact, has more to do with the sounds you leave out—these silent letters and other common reductions—than what’s printed on the page. Let’s get to work! You can learn English with American pop songs! I'll show you how to use music to improve your English learning skills and you'll have a lot of fun too. In this video I'll analyze the spoken English in Taylor Swift's song Wildest Dreams. We'll learn about English reductions and real spoken English, giving you new tools to sound more natural when speaking with an English accent and more deeply understand native English speakers. When you learn English with songs you're unlocking one of the toughest problems about improving your spoken English: as you sing along, you're naturally and melodically mimicking the sounds you hear (vs. simply reading text off a page). Your brain and voice are working together to re-create the sounds you're hearing...you'll be doing exactly what I teach my students to do to make their English speaking sound more natural! Your ears and voice will work in tandem to help you improve. While it’s important for you to read and memorize vocabulary words as you’re learning English, that’s only half of your work. If you’re like the vast majority of English language learners, you want to improve your English skills so that you can have more conversations and feel more confident as you’re speaking. There’s simply no better way for you to increase your vocabulary than to learn words in context. And that’s what we’ll do here. Pronouncing these vocabulary words like a native speaker requires that you learn the reductions, intonation and rhythm used by Americans. I’ll walk you through everything in detail, using IPA to be precise about each sound. I’ll describe what your tongue, lips and mouth need to do in order to produce each sound with precision. While I know that it’s not easy to improve your spoken English vocabulary I hope this video will help you make a lot of progress. Good luck!
