The School of Life
The School of Life is a global organisation dedicated to fostering emotional well-being, both through our YouTube channel and our real-life schools in 10 locations around the world. We apply psychology, philosophy, and culture to everyday life, addressing the questions we're never taught enough about at regular school or college: How can relationships go well? What is meaningful work? How can love last? How can one find calm? What has gone wrong (and right) with capitalism? We love the humanities, especially philosophy, psychotherapy, literature and art - always going to them in search of ideas that are thought-provoking, useful and consoling.   We're about wisdom, emotional intelligence and self-understanding.   We publish two films a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 14.00hrs GMT.

Knowing Ourselves Intellectually vs. Knowing Ourselves Emotionally Knowing Ourselves Intellectually vs. Knowing Ourselves Emotionally

It's obviously a great idea to try to understand ourselves, but one of the further distinctions we need to make is between knowing ourselves intellectually and knowing ourselves emotionally. The latter variety of knowledge is rather harder but a good deal more valuable as well. It is extraordinarily hard to secure even basic insights into our characters and motivations – of a kind that we hope can free us from some of the neuroses and compulsions that spoil so much of our lives. It is therefore especially humbling and at moments truly dispiriting to realise that dispelling ignorance of our psyches with knowledge isn’t going to be enough by itself. Or rather, we stand to realise that there is going to need to be a further and yet more arduous distinction to observe between knowing something about ourselves intellectually and knowing about it emotionally…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/nCRoLY MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Visit us in person at our London HQ: https://goo.gl/mT4D3f Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/mWdupK Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Nick Hilditch http://nickhilditch.com/

We're encouraged to read so many books by other people; but the book we deep down really long to read is the one that could explain ourselves to ourselves. The Children of Snobs The Children of Snobs
1 week ago En Ru
It can be deeply painful to be the child of snobs. That is, to be someone who received a kind of love in our formative years that was heavily dependent on our performance, not on our essence. It can be enough to make a mess of our lives, unless we realise - and get on top of - the dynamics. They are the people in the newspaper, or the ones who live in the other part of town or went to the school we didn’t go to – but it’s nice not to imagine them too near to home. Yet that’s to deny an obvious eventuality: snobs may lie closer to us. Snobs form couples; they have children. And we might be among them. However painful the unvarnished thought, we might be the children of snobs. It’s a situation it can be therapeutic to face up to and to try to make sense of…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/cgQRoM MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Visit us in person at our London HQ: https://goo.gl/PDrC4Z Watch more films on WORK and CAPITALISM in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLcapitalism You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/am8qWH Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Kate Balchin http://www.katebalchin.com/

Friedrich Nietzsche was one of the great theorists of envy: he believed that envy is everywhere and that most of us don't even realise how much we feel it and the way it powers our behaviour. The Dangers of Loving or Hating Too Much The Dangers of Loving or Hating Too Much

It can be deeply tempting to split people into two camps, those of the 'good' and those of the 'evil'. But in truth, no one - not even the worst sinner or purest saint - is ever either totally good or bad. We're all a perplexing mixture of the two. Why so Many People Want to Be Writers Why so Many People Want to Be Writers

It is, in a sense, a delightful development that so many people nowadays want to be writers. But there is also a darker backdrop to this desire: a huge rise in loneliness. The longing one day to turn out a book – probably a novel or, less likely, an autobiography – lies close to the center of contemporary aspirations. This is – at one level – a hugely welcome development, a consequence of widespread literacy, higher educational standards and a proper focus on the power of books to change lives. But looked at from another angle, it may also, in private, be the result of something rather more desultory: an epidemic of isolation and loneliness. The army of literary agents, scouts, editors and writing coaches testifies not only to our love of literature, but also, less intentionally, to an unaddressed groundswell of painful solitude…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/BCvmvk MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Visit us in person at our London HQ: https://www.theschooloflife.com/london/about-us/ Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/ptzhzu Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Creative Seed https://creativeseed.co.za/

How to Cope If the Worst Came to the Worst.. How to Cope If the Worst Came to the Worst..

Many of us suffer enormous anxieties about what might happen if the worst came to the worst. Well-meaning friends often reassure us that things might go really well, but there is often great relief to be found in imagining the darkest scenarios and being able to see that we could, ultimately, survive them. It’s a well-meaning move, but it also – unintentionally – leaves our fears to fester; they fill us with unnamed dread and sometimes loom far larger than they should. So an opposite move – displayed here – involves looking our anxieties directly in the eye, refusing to be cowed by them and examining them in exhaustive detail so as to drain them of their debilitating power. Love Me for Who I Really Am Love Me for Who I Really Am

One of our greatest demands in love is that our partner should love us 'for who we really are'. It sounds Romantic enough, but in truth, none of us should ever expect another person to admire and adore us in our totality, with all our flaws and questionable sides. True love means being generous towards what is broken in ourselves and others - but not, for that matter, being expected to admire it all. They’ve also hinted they’d like you to take more of an interest in the children’s homework and to help to host more dinner parties. It doesn’t feel very pleasant. However, the way it goes about its task shows a great deal more variety and imagination: in the East, there are lessons to be learnt in tea ceremonies, in flower arranging, in the repair of vases and in the ritual contemplation of rivers. The True and the False Self The True and the False Self
2 months ago En
A good life is one in which we can dare to show our True Self and do not mind too much occasionally having to wear the mask of a False Self. But for this to be possible, we need a certain sort of childhood - as the masterful British psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott helped to explain in his theory of the true and the false self, outlined here. Because our caregivers were preoccupied or fragile, we had to be preternaturally attuned to their demands, sensing that we had to comply in order to be loved and tolerated; we had to be false before we had the chance to feel properly alive. And as a result, many years later, without quite understanding the process, we risk feeling unanchored, inwardly dead and somehow not entirely present…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://bit.ly/2qEJiJZ MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Visit us in person at our London HQ: https://bit.ly/2HqFpTn Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://bit.ly/2H4YtHd Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Katherine Blanchin https://vimeo.com/katebalchin

The whole of it calls for tears.’ The Roman philosopher Seneca used to comfort his friends – and himself – with this darkly humourous remark which gets to the heart of Stoicism, the school of philosophy which Seneca helped to found and which dominated the West for two hundred years. We get weepy and furious, says Stoicism, not simply because our plans have failed, but because they have failed and we strongly expected them not to. Therefore, thought Seneca, the task of philosophy is to disappoint us gently before life has a chance to do so violently. The less we expect, the less we will suffer. Through the help of a consoling pessimism, we should strive to turn our rage and our tears into that far less volatile compound: sadness. Seneca was not trying to depress us, just to spare us the kind of hope that, when it fails, inspires bitterness and intemperate shouting.…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/CX4zsr MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Visit us in person at our London HQ: https://goo.gl/Hj5seJ Watch more films on PHILOSOPHY in our playlist: https://goo.gl/AVtBYq You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/nYPJ6V Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Mad Adam Films http://madadamfilms.co.uk/

How A Messed Up Childhood Affects You In Adulthood How A Messed Up Childhood Affects You In Adulthood

It's a humbling situation, but much about who we are as adults can be traced back to things that happened to us before our 12th birthday. We are too timid, or too assertive; too rigid or too accommodating; too focused on material success or excessively lackadaisical. We are obsessively eager around sex or painfully wary and nervous in the face of our own erotic impulses. We are dreamily naive or sourly down to earth; we recoil from risk or embrace it recklessly; we have emerged into adult life determined never to rely on anyone or as desperate for another to complete us; we are overly intellectual or unduly resistant to ideas. The encyclopedia of emotional imbalances is a volume without end. What is certain is that these imbalances come at a huge cost, rendering us less able to exploit our talents and opportunities, less able to lead satisfying lives and a great deal less fun to be around…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/6ubziU MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Visit us in person at our London HQ: https://goo.gl/qf1h3j Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/b7FNXL Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Directed by: Hannah & Martha  Design: Hannah McNally Animation Team: Flora Caulton, Emily Downe, Martha Halliday, Hannah McNally, Kathrin Steinbacher  www.hannahandmartha.com www.floracaulton.co.uk www.emilydowne.co.uk www.kathrinsteinbacher.com

The art of diplomacy is vital if we are to get better at managing our relationships, our friendships and our working lives. The leaders of neighbouring states might be touchy on points of personal pride and quickly roused to anger; if they met head on, they might be liable to infuriate each other and start a disastrous war. Instead, they learnt to send emissaries, people who could state things in less inflammatory ways, who wouldn’t take the issues so personally, who could be more patient and emollient. Diplomacy was a way of avoiding the dangers that come from decisions taken in the heat of the moment. The Advantages of Being 'just Good Friends' The Advantages of Being 'just Good Friends'

We're used to thinking of the state of friendship as hugely inferior compared with that of being in a relationship. But comparing how most people behave in a couple, compared with how they are in a friendship, should perhaps lead us to reconsider our choices. The path towards a tender future is being gently but firmly closed off. We are, with a smile, being shunted into the category of the failed, the ignored and the lightly despised. The other must in some way have worked out the despicable truths about us – all the ones that we tried so hard to disguise and even to believe didn’t exist – and has logically decided to take their leave. However, teaching is far from being something that we only need to learn if we’re contemplating a career in education. Considered properly, teaching – by which we mean, the vital business of getting an important idea from one mind into another – is one of the most crucial life skills that any of us ever require. Our age has a high esteem for parties. Yet some of us have a particular fear of them - which we're made to feel very bad about, as if this was a sure sign of being an anti-social and unfriendly person. Far from it. It can be easy to feel that no one in the world really cares about us. The truth is more complicated: people are generally able to care a lot, but they need to hear a clear sign of distress first - something we're often too inhibited or modest to give. We should learn to (as it were) scream when we're really in trouble. People will generally come running. Jesus as a Philosopher of Kindness Jesus as a Philosopher of Kindness

Discussions of Jesus often miss that he was, quite aside from anything else, remarkably wise, one of the great philosophers of his time. One of the most salient of his lessons comes in chapter eight of the Gospel of Saint John. Jesus has recently come down from Galilee to Jerusalem when some Pharisees, members of a sect focused on precise adherence to Jewish tradition and law, present him with a married woman whom they have caught having sex with someone other than her husband. ‘Teacher,’ they ask him, ‘this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. What Your Home Says About You... What Your Home Says About You...

One of our most basic psychological needs is to create a home, that is a space that is decorated in such a way as to reflect our values back to us. As we create our rooms, we engage passionately with culture in a way we seldom do in the supposedly higher realms of museums or galleries. With a map of optimal development in mind, we could more clearly appreciate where dislocation begins, what we have to be grateful for and what there is to regret. NIETZSCHE ON: Amor Fati NIETZSCHE ON: Amor Fati

Friedrich Nietzsche had a particular fondness for a concept called (in Latin) 'amor fati', a Stoic acceptance of one's fate and a commitment to embrace reality, in all its beauty and pain. The person of amor fati doesn’t seek to erase anything of their past, but rather accepts what has occurred, the good and the bad, the mistaken and the wise, with strength and an all-embracing gratitude that borders on a kind of enthusiastic affection…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/cDu7st MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Visit us in person at our London HQ: https://goo.gl/aRYWCo Watch more films on CURRICULUM in our playlist: http://bit.ly/2bVcNyy You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/bE9oZg Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Mike Booth https://www.youtube.com/somegreybloke

The Attractiveness of Unhappy Looking People The Attractiveness of Unhappy Looking People

We are often taught that the best way to prove attractive is to smile. The idea feels logical and for the most part highly appropriate, but it shouldn't sideline the particular appeal of visible sadness and melancholy. An essay on the charm and depth of sad faces. The idea feels logical and for the most part highly appropriate, but it shouldn’t blind us to the occasional claims of a contrary minority approach, this one founded on an awareness that friendship between people is ultimately based not on boosterish accounts of recent triumphs, but on the possibility of shared grief, sadness and melancholy…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/8c98Qr MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/mR9Ah3 Watch more films on RELATIONSHIPS in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLrelationships You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/Us9zpU Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Matthew Hammett Knott https://www.curtisbrown.co.uk/client/matthew-hammett-knott

Why You Should Read Self-help Books Why You Should Read Self-help Books

We're often encouraged to be dismissive of the idea of self-help books, but reading in order to grow emotionally is one of the most serious and important of all literary tasks. For gifts and more from The School of Life, visit our online shop: https://goo.gl/NrBA4D Join our mailing list: http://bit.ly/2e0TQNJ Or visit us in person at our London HQ: https://goo.gl/Ly79vA Download our App: https://goo.gl/Me2XAz FURTHER READING “There is no more ridiculed genre than the self-help book. Intellectually-minded people universally scorn the idea of them. Self-help books don’t appear on reading lists at any prestigious university, they’re not reviewed by highbrow journals and it’s inconceivable that a major literary prize could ever be awarded to one of their authors. This concerted attack on the entire genre of self help is a symptom of a Romantic prejudice against the idea of Emotional Education. Offering explicit Emotional Education is regarded as beneath the dignity of any serious writer. We should – if we are at all intelligent – know how to live already…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/5NhGkW MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/nXvAgA Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/Me2XAz Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Nina Cosford http://www.ninacosford.com/ Animation by Ali Graham http://www.grarg.com

How to Lose the Fear of Being an Idiot How to Lose the Fear of Being an Idiot
5 months ago En
We tend to fear being an idiot as a terrible, remote possibility. This keeps us anxious and unsettled. Far better to accept head on, and with good grace, that we are - all of us - idiots. And that may just be OK. For gifts and more from The School of Life, visit our online shop: https://goo.gl/mc6Wxu Join our mailing list: http://bit.ly/2e0TQNJ Or visit us in person at our London HQ: https://goo.gl/3pmMBQ Download our App: https://goo.gl/PkxbkS FURTHER READING “‘The Inner Idiot’ is a bracing term used to describe a substantial, hugely influential and strenuously concealed part of everyone. An Idiot is what we deeply fear being, it is what we suspect in our darkest hours that we might be – and it is what we should simply accept, with humour and good grace, that we often truly are. A decent life isn’t one in which we foolishly believe we can slay or evade The Inner Idiot; it’s one in which we practice the only art available to us: sensible cohabitation…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/LREk7f MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/TJGAFA Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/PkxbkS Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Gemma Green Hope http://www.gemmagreenhope.com/

A Reason Not to Worry What Others Think A Reason Not to Worry What Others Think

We spend a little too much time worrying about how we must appear in the minds of others. However, the poignant, useful truth is that almost everyone doesn't care at all about who we are, what we're doing and how we've messed up. It shows a superficially bucolic scene: ships are taking sail, a shepherd is tending to his flock, distant cities look prosperous and ordered…” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://goo.gl/nmm9yW MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/Nom3zg Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://goo.gl/rRzXcT Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Mike Booth https://www.youtube.com/somegreybloke
